Good news for all the participants to the first aluminium print giveaway. Our friend Fox012 managed to get a second aluminium print featuring Summer Glau at the beach. Once again, he offered us to hold a contest and give Summer Glau fans the chance to hang on their wall an exceptional piece.

While the photo is identical, the dimensions are this time 20 inches x 60 inches, i.e. 50 cm x 150 cm. Here are two photos of the life-sized aluminium plate to win:

To enter the giveaway, all you have to do is write a comment under this blog post or anywhere else this giveaway is posted online, and a winner will be chosen randomly among the participants.
Please note that Fox012 is located in Germany, which means sending this large print overseas could be expensive. That also means the final attribution relies on the condition that the winner and Fox012 can sort out the delivery conditions.

So good luck everyone and a huge thank you to Fox012 for his generous offer!

Check out the lovely photos that Necrowizard, the winner of the previous giveaway, send us:

Matt Rorie wrote in October 2011 an interesting and without concession piece about genre actors.

The premise of the article is that many of our favorite actors from sci-fi and fantasy media wind up doing...pretty much nothing but sci-fi or fantasy for the rest of their careers? The author of the article mentions many sfi-fi actors, including our very own Firefly, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and now Arrow's Summer Glau.

Are Science Fiction Actors Doomed To Get Typecast?

I have reproduced below a paragraph but please bear in mind that Summer is not as the center of the article.

Another example: Summer Glau. From Firefly to Serenity to Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles to Dollhouse to The Cape to her upcoming fan-service-y appearance in a comedy about LARP-ing with a name that embarrasses me even when I think about it, I would be shocked beyond belief if she did not wind up signing autographs at the Great Lakes Comic-Con in 15 years in order to float her rent. That sounds cruel, and perhaps it is, but if Glau was going to escape the whirlpool of genre acting and break out into something more mainstream, it certainly seems like it would’ve happened by now, right?

This is the kind of career arc that seems to befall genre actors fairly often: you make a splash early in your career in some beloved and well-known (or beloved and cultishly-adored) sci-fi show or horror franchise, and then...you jump to another sci-fi show or horror franchise, and then...your career is effectively locked into place (see also: Linda Blair, still awkwardly hosting SyFy channel programs about possession 30 years after The Exorcist). You continue down the path of genre filmmaking, taking what paychecks come your way, while always looking for a role that never quite comes in something that might gain you a bit more credibility.

Read the full article article at Screened.

This article reminds of a 2008 lecture by renowned genre writer Neal Stephenson, who has his own rather sophisticated (using the term descriptively, here) theory on why sci-fi actors become niche actors, specifically using Sigourney Weaver, Lena Headey and Summer Glau as one of his examples. His ideas here are part of a larger argument in the lecture (entitled "Science Fiction as a Literary Genre"), but you can watch the short version below:

KortoloB at the Summer Glau Reddit made an elaborate and interesting graph that details the minutes of genre vs. non-genre episodes/films she's been in so far:

Summer Glau minutes of genre vs. non-genre episodes/films

KortoloB's comments on the graph:

You can see from the graph that the only times that she hasn't been in something non-genre is when she's been working on big genre projects, such as Firefly, Serenity and TSCC.
Some fun facts from my statistics:
To watch all episodes and films Summer's been in in one straight run, you'd have to sit down for almost three days straight.
81% of that time you would be watching a genre show/film.
2004 is the only year in her career where she wasn't on a genre show, but in 2002, '05 and '08 Summer was exclusively in genre-shows/films.
Summer has commitment issues. The only years she has been faithful to a show (not counting Sleepover since she was in it for less then a minute) is in 2004, when she guest starred on an episode of CSI, and in 2008 when she starred in TSCC.

Here's a graph where minutes are divided between shows instead of genre:

Summer Glau minutes of genre vs. non-genre episodes/films

On a similar topic, check out Summer Glau's detailed Filmography.

Summer Glau is an amazing sci-fi actress. She has played two of the most iconic characters in recent sci-fi history, River Tam in Joss Whedon's Firefly and Cameron Philipps in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Her action shots during Firefly & Serenity alone qualify her to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with action 'diva' Sigourney Weaver. But she's also somewhat of a low profile actress and that is very respectable. The hollywood jetset seems to crave popularity at a too high cost. Up to now it seems, Summer is doing a pretty good job.

That said, I hope she becomes more recognized and more successful; She deverves that much, such a talented actress. Whatever role she’s played, and regardless of which was the first time you saw Summer perform, you knew at that moment you were seeing something special. When she cried, you were crying with her in sympathy, when she was kicking ass you were cheering her on like nothing else, and when she was troubled you wanted to tell her it was going to be okay. That ladies and gentleman is what Summer Glau does with her varied roles. She doesn’t just act, she makes you believe.

Summer Glau is and always will be my number one favorite actress.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles actors Thomas Dekker, Summer Glau, Leven Rambin and Brian Austin Green attended the 2008 Teen Choice Awards at Gibson Amphitheater on August 3, 2008 in Los Angeles, California. Summer Glau was nominated in the "Choice TV Actress: Action Adventure" and  "Choice TV Breakout Star Female" for her role as Cameron in TSCC (see "Awards and Nominations" page).

I have collected various videos from the TSCC cast arrivals and during the show, including a never seen before video featuring celebrities as they are being dropped off at the red carpet and pose for photographers before heading to the Awards (Summer Glau at 0:38).

Comic book as well as TV show writers use copiously color symbolism; so when a TV show reimagines comic book superheroes, as it is the case for Smallville or Arrow, you can expect a lot of visual allusions, particularly to the colors used in the comics, some subtle, some not so subtle.

Take these highly suggestive production stills for Arrow season 2 premiere:

Summer Glau and Emily Bett Rickards Dresses on ArrowSummer Glau red dress on ArrowEmily Bett Rickards blue dress on Arrow

When The CW released this still featuring Summer Glau's Isabel Rochev in a red dress across the table from Emily Bett Rickards's Felicity in blue, I knew that the choice of these primary colors was not motivated by fashion but was a deliberate choice from the writers.

Summer's red dress is a clear reference to Isabel Rochev as depicted in DC comics; check out theses pictures:

Isabel Rochev red dress in DC comicsIsabel Rochev red dress in DC comics

The color red symbolizes all things intense and passionate and I hope it will reflect in Arrow's version of Isabel Rochev (learn more about Summer Glau's character in a previous News).

Emily's blue dress is quite an improvement from Arrow season one and symbolizes her loyaulty to Oliver (the following screencaptures from Arrow episodes are in chronological order).

When we first met Felicity, she wore neutral white or grey colors that reflect her low level of investment on Oliver's business (she was just investigating things for Walter Steele, CEO of Queen Consolidated).

Felicity dress code in ArrowFelicity dress code in Arrow

As she begins to investigate for Oliver Queen, her colors became more deep and she wore bluish colors, in order to reflect her deeper involvement in Oliver's business.

Felicity dress code in ArrowFelicity dress code in Arrow

And when Felicity confronted Oliver about his mysteries and he finally revealed his secret identity to her, Felicity's colors turned to pink and purple, which symbolizes transformation and mystery (see Color Symbolism and Culture). Even her lipstick turned purple (third image) while it has always been red before :-)

Felicity dress code in ArrowFelicity dress code in ArrowFelicity dress code in Arrow

Purple is not a primary color, it's a combination of the two primary colors blue and red. At this point, Felicity wasn't a fully-fledged member of Oliver's team, she was just in-between. This reminds me of the Lex Luthor from the first seasons of The CW's Smallville, when Lex hadn't shifted to the dark side; remember those purple shirts he wore and the combination of blue/purple/red stain-glass windows in the Luthor mansion?

Nothing is random in a scripted TV show. Everybody who have seen Smallville knows that Clark Kent wears only blue and red colors (like Superman's costume) but his entire environment had the same colors; the Kent farm, the set, the furnitures, various papers. A similar color code  applies to Arrow to; this is why the color green is omnipresent on Arrow, but I think you got that already. The predominant colors on the show - at least when Oliver Queen/The Hood is involved - are solid green, red and blue and you find them everywhere; to give a simple example, since lots of scenes in Arrow take place at Oliver's club 'Verdant' (even the name ''vert' means green in French), Arrow's writers love to play with the colors of straws, as seen below:

Felicity dress code in ArrowFelicity dress code in Arrow

A similar study could be made for each character of the show and his environment. With more superheroes set to appear in season two, and their accompagnying costume colors, no doubt the writers, the wardrobe department and set decorators will have a lot of material to play with. I hope that after reading this small article, you will take a look at all these details that give a show a distinctive look and feel.

It looks like there is plenty to get excited for next season, premiering on Wednesday, October 9 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.

No sooner have we seen our first photographic look at Summer Glau as Oliver's new adversary Isabel Rochev in Arrow, than The CW has provided us with no less than 27 flashy photos from the first episode of Arrow's second season, titled "City of Heroes." with more Summer Glau, shoutouts galore and and a glimpse of what is about to happen in Starling City.

'City of Heroes'.

The official press release for season 2 premiere “City of Heroes” reveals that we’ll see Diggle and Felicity heading all the way to Lian Yu in search of Oliver, who left Starling City in his grief. Oliver returns to find Isabel Rochev (Summer Glau) preparing a hostile takeover of Queen Consolidated, while Roy Harper attempts to fill the void left by the Arrow’s absence, and flashbacks to the island show Slade, and Shado and Oliver in a desperate situation.

From the looks of the photo set below, negotiations with Isabel Rochev end up rudely interrupted by a deadly shootout with a new set of villains, apparently vigilante copycats. Elsewhere, Detective Lance has been busted down to beat cop for helping the vigilante last season, while Roy Harper manages to get himself in trouble whether with or without Oliver’s sister Thea.

While waiting for the return of Arrow on Wednesday, October 9 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW, check out the full set of HQ photos from “City of Heroes” below!

Inside the Box finds Distributor The team behind 'Inside the Box' started working with the distribution company Marvin&Wayne Short Film Distribution.

'Inside the Box' is one of the films they selected this year and with their help they will screen David Martin Porras short in as many film festivals as they can, starting with the official premiere at the 58th edition of the International Film Festival of Valladolid (Seminci) from 19-26 October 2013.

Hopefully you will have the chance to see it in a big screen near you very soon.

The following still featuring Summer Glau and Wilson Bethel during the intense bedroom scene in 'Inside the Box' made it as the profile image for Marvin&Wyne Distribution a few days ago and shows how 'Inside the Box' is a pitch perfect of film noir.

Inside the Box is going to be screened at film festivals, and hopefully all fans will be able to see it when it will be available by VOD and DVD at a date to be determined. If you haven't already, check out the extended behind the scenes video released a few weeks ago. It contains new images from the cast and crew and will give you a good idea of all the work the whole team put into this film.
